“Planning is the most essential component in writing an essay.”
Before you even begin an essay, it is imperative that you take the time to plan. This not only ensures that your essay remains cohesive throughout as you systematically go through every point that you have made in your plan, but it also ensures that you remain on point throughout your essay. With the prompt in front of you, writing your ideas down in dot-point form can also eradicate the possibility of forgetting an idea while writing an essay- your plan is the blueprint to your essay, a very handy thing when you are stressed in a sac or exam.
The goal is to write this plan in 5 minutes. This is something that you'll need to practice. I'd recommend giving yourself 20 minutes to write the first plan, which should include 3 topic sentences, and 3-4 ideas under each one. If you are using the standard essay form of 3 body paragraphs, your ideas should total between 9-12 throughout your essay. By starting with 20 minutes, you can take the time to create strong topic sentences that explore the prompt, and come up with your ideas. As you become more adept at writing plans, you can minimise the time requirements until you can write a plan in 5 minutes. You will then be on your way to writing a strong essay with the blueprint of the plan to help you!
