How to Cope With the Month of May in Year 12

So the month of May is here and I want you to be prepared for what will be a tough month. I’m not saying this to scare you, but so you can prepare for it… fear not, I’m here to help.

The reason why May is tough in Year 12 you might ask? For the sole reason that by May, you have already spent so much time in Year 12, you’ve studied so hard… yet your exams are so far away in November! It’s the middle point where the end of Year 12 seems to be a long journey ahead.

I promise that the second that June hits, you’ll feel more motivated and less stressed. Holidays are at the end of June, term 3 doesn’t commence until mid July… you’ve only really got August and then bam- holidays again in September! You’re back at school for roughly two weeks before scheduled classes stop and you have roughly one week before your first VCE exam- English on November 1st. See what I mean? From June, it’ll fly :)

But let’s break down some strategies to help you through the month of May:

  • It’s so important to listen to your body. Get to bed early each night, I’d suggest by 9.30pm. As a teenager, your brain is still developing. Your age group needs more sleep than any other age group, lucky you!
  • Stay organised. Keep track of your homework and study. Tick things off when you have completed a task. Refer to our other blog posts on organisational skills for further information.
  • Talk to your family and friends about how you are coping with the year, the stress, the anxiety and workload.
  • Exercise on a daily basis. This will clear your head. Pop your headphones in and go for a run, walk or head to the gym.
  • Do things outside of study. Time spent away from study is just as important as studying- it will allow you to focus on your work when you are studying!
  • If you can, go away for a weekend. Perhaps with friends or family. It doesn’t need to be far, but a new environment will help you feel rejuvenated when you return to school on the Monday.
  • Remember that you are not alone. Your friends are going through the same thing. Your family are there to support you. I’m here if you would like to contact me to talk about this further. There are organisations to call if you are struggling in Year 12, such as Beyond Blue (1300 22 4636) and Headspace (www.headspace.org.au

Please remember that Year 12 isn’t the only thing that matters in life. It is not worth becoming extremely stressed over. Our mental health is the most important thing. Let’s continue to keep striving to become the best version of ourselves that we can be- that way, you can be proud of whatever you achieve in Year 12 :)

Sending positive thoughts your way through the month of May :)
